Bitter Flavor Profile

Consuming all 6 flavor profiles throughout the day, assures happy taste buds, but also assures we have adequately nourished ourselves.  The bitter flavor profile can be a difficult one for some people. Bitter foods are synonymous with medicine, as in “the bitter pill to swallow.” Bitter foods are in fact medicinal foods, some of the most powerful healing foods are bitter, so let’s learn to love them!

The bitter taste stimulates the appetite and helps bring out the other flavors in food.  Bitter tasting foods are also powerful detoxifiers, and have antibiotic, anti-parasitic, and antiseptic qualities. They also helpful reducing weight, water retention, skin rashes, and nausea.

If you still don’t like bitter foods, or your kids don’t like them – hide them.  They are easy to sneak into smoothie, soups, stews and baked goods.  Their health benefits are too great to ignore entirely, even if it is a bitter taste to swallow.
